Reading Notes: Ramayana Part B
For Rama's exile, and Dasharatha's death, Rama's brother Bharata was gone. This will be quite the surprise. After hearing what his mother did, he shamed her and said he would bring Rama back.
Dasaratha is given a proper funeral by Bharata.
Rama refuses the offer of the throne from Bharata, saying they must both fulfill what has been told to them.
Rama is given sandals to wear, then gives them back so they may be waiting at the throne for his return.
We learn a brief history of Sita during one of their visits with a sage. She was a special child, not of birth by King Janaka.
Sita is abducted by a special demon that can't be killed by your typical sharp weapon. It turns out he was cursed to be killed by Rama in order to reach heaven.
Rama attains more weapons from another sage, Agastya who offers him a place to stay. Rama refuses and goes deeper into the woods.
Ravana's sister falls in love with Rama and he suggests she seduce his brother. I have no idea how this is a good idea in any way, but sure. The versed version sounds much more threatening.
Hating the rejection, she attacks, gets dismembered, and runs away. This leads to the forming of a small Rakshasa army to fight Rama and crew.
Even an army couldn't stop them. Their celestial weapons annihilated the army and Khara was evaporated by a flaming arrow.
Now the big brother, Ravana get involved after hearing of the lost battle. Now it's his turn to start a battle with Rama.
Ravana reaches out to the son of Thataka who was slain by Rama in a ploy to kidnap Sita.
Rama is fooled by the disguise of the golden deer as it has normally been said that rakshasas do not shapeshift into deer. Sita wants it, so Rama must get it for her.
Upon slaying the deer, it assumes Rama's voice to sound like it is Rama dying. Laksmana says he is not worried and must stay by Sita, but she thinks Rama is dead.
Laksmana leaves Sita alone for just a moment, but Ravana is able to get to her in disguise and steal her away.
Having Sita stolen away ends up actually being part of a much larger plan by the god Brahma. Because of this, Rama will track down Ravana and kill him. There's an intense battle in the air where Ravana is victorious but wounded a little.
Ravana tries to rape Sita, but he is cursed and could only do so if she consents. Of course she does not. He sends her to a beautiful area with lavish food to try to seduce her, but she only wants Rama.
Rama and Lakshmana get an update on what happened from the great bird that lost its battle to Ravana.
Rama and Lakshmana cremate a rakshasa that is purified and able to give them info on Sita.
They reach another hermit who had been told of their arrival many many years ago. Now that they have finally made it to her, her destiny is complete and she may die. They perform a proper funeral for her.
