Week 11 Story: The Starving Theif

A social worker named Dave was walking up and down Main Street making his weekly rounds throughout the homeless population. He saw an unfamiliar face and began to talk to them to find out where they were from and how he could possibly be of assistance. The man said he had been homeless for only a few months and just recently started wandering Main in hopes of finding a job so he could eat. Dave mentioned a soup kitchen just a few streets over that he volunteered for and told the man he could come by once a day for a warm meal, free of charge.

Weeks go by while the homeless man, who turns out to be named Chris, goes to the soup kitchen. He loves the food, but maybe he loves it just a little too much. One early morning, Chris asks Dave if he could help out volunteering in the kitchen, as a thank you for letting him come in. Dave, elated, is happy to let Chris help!

Unbeknownst to Dave, it was Chris's plan all along to steal the daily soup all for himself so he could eat all he wanted for quite some time. Chris asks around for help in his plan, but everyone refuses, saying they would never steal from a charitable place. Still Chris launches his plan into action and steals a few gallons of freshly prepped chicken soup. To his surprise, he had stolen it much to early, the chicken wasn't fully cooked and the soup was nowhere near warm enough.

The next day, Chris was struck with food poisoning from the under-cooked chicken, and he could barely go an hour without some sort of accident of near miss. He made his way back to the soup kitchen only to be confronted by Dave and the others he had tried to rope into his heist. Chris was banished from the kitchen and never allowed to eat there again. Dave also spread his name to the other nearby kitchens so they would do the same.

Author's Note/Bibliography: This is loosely based off The Golden Goose by Ellen C. Babbitt. Instead of a golden goose, however, I took a modern twist on it and used a soup kitchen. Chris in this story is the mother who got greedy and tried to steal all the feathers for herself, but was left with nothing.

  1. Hey Reid! Great story. I think that your story did a great job of capturing the same theme that was in the golden goose. The modernization of your tale went really well with the lesson that was learned in the original story! Keep up your hard work!

  2. Hi Reid!
I was really curious while reading your story this week about what the original was. Now knowing it was based off the Golden Goose it all makes perfect sense! You did an awesome job at coming up with an original concept. I look forward to reading what else you have come up with!
