Week 9 Reading Notes: More Mahabharata Part B

Preparations of War: Some people want peace, some people want war. The Pandavas send a messenger offering peace, and it's almost accepted, but Duryodhana refuses anything that's not war.

The Battle Begins: Arjuna (Pandu) is hesitant to attack his uncle and cousins, but decides to fight. For the first time in this story, Dryodhana is actually winning! Oh no! Day two begins and The Pandavas bounce back. Soon after, Bhima (Pandu) slays many of his cousins, while Duryodhana escapes.

Bhisma and Drona Fall: While there is a lack of celestial beings in this story, there is still destiny. Shikhandin was destined to kill Bhishma. The fight was everything but epic. Bhishma would not fight as Shikhandin was born a woman, so after letting his guard down, he is peppered with arrows and the cousins weep over his as he dies. Again, Duryodhana is asked for peace, but STILL REFUSES. After many confusions of a son named the same as an elephant, Drona is then killed in battle. This at last leaves Karna to lead the army.

General Karna: Karna has no attachment to the cousins, so maybe he'll be able to fight them. Karna goes to fight Arjuna but runs into Yudhishthira. Their fight ends in a draw, but Karna is still set on getting to Arjuna.

Arjuna and Karna: Karna gets got by karma. Arjuna's bow breaks and Karna refuses to let him fix it before continuing the fight. He fixes it mid battle and Karna's chariot breaks. In return for not honoring Arjuna, Arjuna does not honor Karna and kills him.

The End: Everyone's dead and Duryodhana still wants to go to war. Not the happiest ending, but Duryodhana does eventually die, only after all the Pandava brother's sons have been killed. It is discovered that Karna was actually their brother that they've now killed. In the end, everyone is sad about the losses endured and no one sees it as a victory.
