Reading Notes: Ramayana Part C
Rama and Laksmana go in search of Sugriva an exiled monkey-king. They are greeted by Hanuman, who becomes a devoted follower. Because Rama and Sugriva have both been exiled and lost their wives, Sugriva will help.
We learn of how Sugriva was exiled and even though Rama was seeking his protection, but Sugriva ends up asking him for help.
Tara, wife of Vali (Sugriva's brother) warns him that he should not fight against Rama. Rama has never been beaten (other than losing Sita) to this point.
Instead of facing him head on like the rest of his fights that gave others a chance, Rama kills Vali in an ambush. This has caused a lot of discussion around it being a dishonorable fight. This could be a fun story to revisit and turn it into an honorable fight.
Sugriva assumes the throne, but it is not without grieving his lost brother. Though he wanted the throne, he understands what he has had Rama do.
Sugriva says he will help find Sita, but they must wait. Rama laments about what Sita must be going through while he has to sit there and wait. Sadly he cannot wait in the city, even when Sugriva is king because of his status as an exile.
After the rainy season, Sugriva is reminded of his promise and he sends out search parties in every direction. Luckily, Hanuman's group goes in the correct direction towards the island Lanka where Ravana resides.
The bird from earlier has a brother named Sampati who confirms to them that they are going in the correct direction.
Similar to the story of Icarus, Sampati flew too high and his wings were burned.
Hanuman was apparently born with great powers, but it was not known by him until now. A rakshasi tries to kill him. He kills it all the while learning he can jump incredibly far.
Hanuman makes the jump to Lanka searching for Sita, but he cannot find her even when he found his way into Ravana's bedroom.
Hanuman finally finds Sita in a grove and surrounded by rakshasis.
Ravana is still trying to get Sita to take him over Rama.
Sita finds out Rama is loking for her and lets Hanuman know she only has two months to live. At least she knows he's coming!
Hanuman is captured after defeating several rakshasas. He is brought to face Ravana.
Ravana was warned that Rama was coming by Hanuman, and in anger he set his tail on fire.
With his burning tail, he set Lanka aflame, but regretted it thinking he may have killed Sita in the fire.
Once returned, it is time for the main army to march on Lanka. Rama is a little worried about the magic of rakshasas.
Ravana questions if he should just give Sita back, but in talks with his advisors, they are ready to fight Rama.
Ravana's little brother is against the war and actually ends up leaving to join Rama against Ravana.
